沙湖是集沙、水、苇、鸟、山为一体的美丽自然景观。漫步在沙丘上，立刻，一种麻麻的、酥酥的感觉传遍了全身上下，让人有一种说不出的享受。赤着脚登上一座沙丘，俯瞰沙湖，在中午的烈日照耀下，沙湖真如一块从天而降的玛瑙，碧的是湖，翠的是苇，上面偶尔有一、两只不知是被什么吓着的水鸟腾空飞起。看到这儿，你是不是也想下去和水鸟们畅游一番呢?如果不能，我们还可以去坐快艇。登上快艇，任由它加足马力在芦苇丛中穿梭，雪白的浪花不停地拍打着船舷，奏出了一曲欢迎游客的高歌，船行其中，时常有“山重水复疑无路”的担心，也有“柳暗花明又一村”的豁然开朗。

我们坐船从南岸到北岸，只见湖水碧绿，深不可测，一排排大浪冲撞湖岸发出轰响。湖中成片的芦苇随风摇曳，犹如水中森林。小船飞驰进芦苇荡，在芦苇丛中穿梭，惊起成千上万只水鸟，他们尖叫着飞起来，在空中盘旋，遮天蔽日。当船速减慢，你会看见水中的鱼儿成群结队，互相追逐嬉戏，好似一幅原始古朴的图画。这里远离城市的高楼，远离汽车和喧闹，只有湖水，沙子，小鸟和鱼儿，就像传说中的世外桃园。
到了北岸，是座座沙山和茫茫沙海，在阳光照射下金光闪闪。我向沙山爬去，一落脚，沙子就没过脚脖子，走一步退半步，让人感到在沙子中行走的艰难。气呼呼的我终于爬上了山顶。
从沙山上往下滑，只听沙子嗦嗦的响，细细的沙子覆盖在腿上，暖暖的，随我从高出落下。
沙滩的东西有专供游人骑的骆驼。我骑上一头高大的骆驼，开始胆战心惊，害怕骆驼把我甩下来。骆驼好象明白我此时的心情，在沙滩上哄小孩似的慢慢走着。渐渐的，聪明的骆驼在沙滩上撒野了，跑了一圈又一圈。真过瘾啊!
骑够了骆驼，我们坐在湖边休息，听爸爸讲沙湖动人的传说。距今八九百年前，西夏国王李元昊打了败仗，带着几千名败兵逃进沙漠，一连几天都找不到水喝。正当面临绝境的时候，眼前奇迹般出现了沙湖。西夏人认为这是"长生天"在保佑他们，从此把沙湖尊奉为"圣湖"。然而，多少年来，这里一直是一片荒凉。直到改革开放，当地人民和政府才把沙湖开发成国家级风景区，让"圣湖"真正为人民造福。
